All music must be written before it can be read, understood, and played by musicians. To do this, a system of notation has been developed that gives musicians the information they need to play music as the composer intended it.
Contrary to what some people may say learning music theory does not reduce your ability to enjoy it. In fact you may enjoy it even more after you learn some theory because the more you know about how it works the more you will be able to do as a musician.
If you don't know much theory and you are playing some instrument and you encounter a passage that has the notes C, E, and G, you would have to mentally process those three separately, and this will slow down your ability to perform. If a musician who knows theory plays the same passage they would instantly recognize that the C, E, and G make up a C Major chord and they would play it more easily because it took less mental effort to understand it. The theory makes learning, practicing and performing much easier. All musical activities will be much easier including performing, composing, and improvising.
The first thing musicians should learn about is notation. It includes the staff and clefs. The staff is the basis of written music. It is what the notes are presented on. It consists of 5 lines with four spaces between them.
A rest marks indicates that there will be no note played in the measure for its duration. It is also important to learn about scales and chords (harmony). The next things to learn are melody, phrases, and musical forms.
What is also interesting to know is that the advent of magnetic tape and digital CD technologies, flat disks made from a petroleum-based plastic called vinyl were the preferred media for popular reproduction. Vinyl records replaced an even earlier system of wax-based cylinders which acted as both recording and playback units.
