She stands at the entrance of New York harbor - a 151-foot statue of a woman holding a book and a torch on-high. It's been over a hundred years since the Statue of Liberty found her home in the harbor of New York and it has become an important part of American culture. But would you believe that it was actually a gift from the French?
The structure was built by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, with the help of tons of workers working ten hour days, seven days a week for nine years. It was finally finished in 1884 and presented to America on July 4th. It didn't arrive in the United States until many months later though, because all 350 individual pieces of the statue had to be packed into 214 crates for the long boat ride from France to New York.
It was on Bedloe Island that the Statue of Liberty was reconstructed in America - the island is now called "Liberty Island" and is only accessible by ferry. Auguste Bartholdi thought that the NY harbor was the perfect setting for his masterpiece because it was 'where people get their first view of the New World'. This architectural structure was to be a symbol of welcome for all immigrants coming to America, as well as a universal symbol of freedom. To many Americans she also conveyed a profoundly personal message. The millions of immigrants who were landing in the country in the early twentieth century saw in this majestic figure their first intimation of a new life.
The structure is largely a story of its growing centrality and importance among the cherished symbols of the American nation. At first it differed chiefly in size and location from numerous other classical goddesses who crowded the nineteenth century's repertory of symbols. But size and location were crucially important. She was an overwhelming presence at the entry to America's greatest city. As more vaporous goddesses faded in the harsh light of modernity, the great statue became the centerpiece of a magical American place, recognizable everywhere through postcards and magazine covers, with the NY City skyline rising behind her.
